Summary

Much confusion exists around different types of employment options. Are you an employee, self-employed, an independent contractor? What does each of these scenarios look like? What are the strengths and limitations of each type of arrangement? How do your responsibilities vary under each category? Do you need a contract? What should be included in it? Should you be receiving an annual reviews? Dental hygienists need to be well informed and know their rights and responsibilities under different employment options.

  • Describe the benefits of various types of employment.
  • Describe the risks of various types of employment.
  • Articulate why employment contracts are important.

Brian Gomes

Brian has consulted with some of Canada's largest health care associations and organizations in designing and managing risk retention models. He spent over 10 years as a Vice President focusing in health care and professional liability within the insurance industry, and has held profiles accountable for over 1,000,000 regulated health professionals. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and within his role manages CPA's practice risk insurance and retention program.

Victoria Leck, RDH, BHA

Victoria has 20 years of experience as a dental hygienist, with 18 of those spent in public health. She has also been a faculty member at the Canadian Institute of Dental Hygiene. She is a graduate of the dental hygiene program at Canadore College and holds a bachelor of health administration from Ryerson University. She is currently enrolled in the masters of health management program at McMaster University.

Victoria has been actively involved in the Ontario Association of Public Health Dentistry, holding positions on the executive including member at large, secretary and president as well as co-chairing the health promotion and advocacy committee for several years. Victoria is currently the manager of professional development at the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association.
